The area of Alghero not only has sea and beaches to offer, but it is also an area which preserves traces of ancient civilizations spanning thousands of years which blend into the surrounding landscape.
Not to be missed, a few minutes’ drive from Hotel Giardino La Playa, is the Palmavera Nuraghe, an extraordinary Nuragic complex dating back to the Bronze age which tells the story of a unique civilisation in the world. Continuing along the same road towards Porto Conte, you can also visit the Sant’Imbenia site, a settlement consisting of a nuraghe and a cluster of huts, excavated in the early 80s, which was probably a trading and distribution centre for local products.
A short distance away are the remains of a Roman villa on the seafront, built between the end of the 1st century B.C. and the beginning of the 1st century A.D. Heading towards Alghero airport, the Anghelu Ruju Necropolis has 38 burial chambers cut out of the rock (domus de janas), dating back to 3200-2800 B.C. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Sardinia, recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
In addition, there is the Monte Baranta complex (Olmedo): a pre-Nuragic settlement with megalithic wall and cultural area, which dates back more than 4000 years. There is also the Necropolis of Santu Pedru, consisting of ten “domus de janas” tombs discovered by chance in 1959.
In the city centre you can also visit MUSA – Alghero Archaeological Museum, which displays artifacts unearthed during excavations in the city and surrounding areas, dating from the Neolithic Age to the Middle Ages.
